Renewable Energy

  • Wind
Residential wind is a viable option for many landowners in the High Country. Western NC is one of the few regions in the state that has a sufficient wind resource. General requirements for an effective wind system require a yearly average of at least 10 to 12 mph winds and minimum of one acre of cleared land. Contact High Country Energy Solutions, Inc. to have your site evaluated for the feasibility of wind.
  • Micro-Hydro Electric
By using the flow and elevation drop of small water systems micro-hydro electric turbines harness energy to produce electricity. These systems operate reliably, seven days a week and 24 hours a day. High Country Energy Solutions, Inc. offers micro-hydro systems configured for both off-grid and grid-tied applications. For a site assessment please contact us.

Energy Analysis

High Country Energy Solutions, Inc. offers energy analysis solutions for new and existing residential structures. One of the largest and most cost effective ways to save energy on utility bills is to limit the amount of conditioned air that leaves your home. We can analyze and measure every aspect of your home, and design a custom solution to meet your needs. How we measure:
  • Thermal imagining
  • Blowing door testing
  • Duct Blaster testing
These methods allow us to develop a complete energy profile of your home so we can quickly and more accurately resolve any problems.

Whole-House Weatherization

Whole-House Weatherization: Weatherizing your home is guaranteed to reduce your energy bills. Many of our clients have seen a savings of 15% or more! Why wait another day when you could increase the comfort of your home, improve your indoor air quality, and provide your family with a cleaner and safer living environment. As the cost of heating and cooling our buildings continues to rise, it is imperative we retrofit and construct our homes in an energy efficient manner.   Services HCES offers to meet this need include:
  • Air Sealing
  • Duct Sealing
  • Insulation
  • Sealed Crawl Spaces
  • Moisture Control
  • Radon Mitigation
The Department of Energy estimates, “On average, weatherization reduces heating bills by 32% and overall energy bills by about $350 per year at current prices”. Please contact us for a thorough evaluation of your home so you can start saving energy and money today.

Insulation

High Country Energy Solutions, Inc. offers several environmentally friendly insulation products. Products offered include:
  • Blown Cellulose
  • Blown formaldehyde free fiberglass
  • Dense-Packed Cellulose
  • Formaldehyde Free Fiberglass Batt Insulation
  • Soy-based Spray Foam.
Our cellulose insulation is composed of 80-85% recycled newsprint. In addition, cellulose can easily be added to existing insulation to increase overall R-value.
Formaldehyde free fiberglass batt insulation does not release harmful VOC’s (volatile organic compounds) commonly found in generic fiberglass insulation materials.
Soy-based spray foam insulation is a product similar to icynene that works as an air barrier and thermal barrier, but is more environmentally friendly than icynene. High Country Energy Solutions, Inc. has competitive prices for both new construction and retrofit installations.

Sealed Crawl Space Encapsulation

During much of the year high humidity-laden air enters the crawl space via the vents and then condenses on all the cool surfaces that are below the dew point. These surfaces are often your plumbing pipes and HVAC ducts. If we open our vents in the winter time to allow the cold dry air to enter the crawlspace maybe this drying concept could work. However, everyone operates the crawl space vents just the opposite to conserve heat or air conditioning. The better option:

Recent research at Advanced Energy in Raleigh has shown that a sealed crawl space can greatly reduce the moisture load on the home as well as save energy.

Our Sealed Crawl space services involves:
  • Sealing off the air vents
  • Insulating the crawl space walls instead of the floor
  • Using a reinforced, puncture resistant liner that extends all the way up the walls where it is mechanically fastened
  • Installing a sump pump in case a plumbing pipe breaks
  • Installing a dehumidifier to keep the area dry
  • Radon control and mitigation

Frequently Asked Questions

I have plastic on my crawl space floor, how does this compare to a full encapsulation?
Many homes will have a layer of thin 6-mil plastic liner on the crawl space floor to act as a vapor barrier. However, this does little to nothing in terms of moisture control. A full crawl space encapsulation will include a thick 20-mil fiber reinforced liner on the floor and a 10-mil fiber reinforced liner on the walls. All seams are over lapped a minimum of 12 inches and taped. Vents and openings are then sealed and a dehumidifier is installed. The relative humidity will be kept between 50% and 60%, preventing any future mold, mildew and rot of your wooden structures.
My home has a problem with pests and insects. Will encapsulating the crawl space help?
Yes, unsealed crawl spaces are often cool and humid and contain openings where pests can enter your home. This is the perfect breeding ground for mice, spiders and other insects. An encapsulated crawl space solves this problem by sealing these openings and providing a barrier that pests and insects cannot get through.
The insulation under my house is falling down, what could have caused this?
The insulation under most homes is made of fiberglass. Much like a cold glass of water on a warm humid day, it will condensate under certain conditions. This happens under your home because your crawl space can be up to 20 degrees cooler than the outside air. This temperature difference, coupled with high humidity can cause the fiberglass to condensate and fall down due to the added weight. This is a common problem with vented crawl spaces and can be solved by encapsulating.
My Energy bill is too high, what can I do to help bring it down?
One of the largest energy loads on any home is due to heating and cooling, and high- energy costs are usually a sign something isn’t right. Air leakage in a home is one of the biggest causes of high-energy bills. Air flow can occur around windows, doors, pipe cutouts, wire openings and attic openings. While a single one of these may only have a minute amount of air flow, the sum of all of them can be the same as having an open hole in the wall. Even if you have updated insulation, the gaps and seams in the home crawl space and attic may be contributing to massive heat loss. However, with the use of a blower door test and proper air sealing, you can eliminate this airflow and take back control over your energy bills.
I need to run lights and other small loads off the grid, what are my options?
Small, cheap systems that can be bought online may work short term but offer almost no reliable warranty. We can custom design a system of any size to meet your needs and ensure that it will provide years of reliable service.
